About Us
Calm temperaments, strong frames, and unforgettable egg color — that’s the heart of Shaded Shells.
At Shaded Shells, we believe a great flock starts with great stock and clear, caring support. We’re a family farm in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, focused on calm temperaments, strong frames, and the egg color and type our customers love—from chocolatey Black Copper Marans to the classic terra-cotta of Welsummers, the blue tones of Ameraucanas, the fun greens of Olive/Moss layers, the richly hued Chocolate Layers, and the impressive size and stature of Jersey Giants.
Our NPIP Participation
We participate in the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) through the NCDA&CS Veterinary Division here in North Carolina. NPIP is a voluntary state–federal cooperative program that helps safeguard poultry health across the industry. As participants, we follow established standards for testing and certification related to diseases such as Pullorum-Typhoid, Mycoplasma, and Avian Influenza.
What that means for you:
- Our flock is regularly inspected and tested in line with NPIP standards.
- We can market our NPIP status when selling baby chicks and hatching eggs where certification is required for certain transactions.
- You get added assurance that your birds and eggs originate from a program that prioritizes disease control and traceable, healthy stock.
(If you need our current NPIP details for your records or interstate shipping, just ask—happy to provide.)
How We Care for Your Order
- Biosecurity first. We maintain strict protocols to protect our birds; that’s why once an order leaves the farm, it can’t return.
- Thoughtful packing & timing. We schedule shipments with the weather and your location in mind, and we label and cushion every box carefully.
- Clear communication. Pre-shipping emails, pickup coordination, and responsive support—so you always know what’s next.
Policies ()
- Agreement to Terms: Placing an order means you’ve read and agree to our Sales Policy & Terms.
- No Returns/Exchanges: For biosecurity, no poultry or eggs may be returned.
- Chicks: Orders are final (no cancel/change/refund). Live-arrival refunds apply only to chicks that arrive deceased or die within 24 hours (prompt pickup and photo verification required). Replacements can be arranged when available; buyer covers shipping.
- Hatching Eggs: All sales are final. We ship fresh, fertile eggs and see high on-farm hatch rates, but we cannot guarantee hatch outcomes after shipment. Choose the correct shipping option at checkout. Inspect upon delivery and file any carrier damage claims directly with the carrier.
- Pre-Orders: Filled first-come, first-served; winter pre-orders typically begin shipping in March as weather allows. No specific ship dates are guaranteed due to natural laying and hatch cycles.
